    The kankobela is the thumb-piano of the Batonga, who live in the Zambezi valley in Zambia and Zimbabwe on both sides of Lake Kariba. A spider's eggsac membrane is stretched over a hole in the body of the instrument, giving wonderful distortion buzzing: Tongatronics - but without any electricity! And the instrument is held over an external resonator with the middle and ring fingers, giving the possibility of raising the kankobela up an down giving a wah-wah effect.

The kankobela is the thumb-piano of the Batonga, who live in the Zambezi valley in Zambia and Zimbabwe on both sides of Lake Kariba. A solo instrument played by men to express their innermost feelings from spiritual to humourous. The instrument is highly customised and no two players sound the same. Otherworldly songs, mesmerising time patterns - groovy, funky, ancient, modern.
This album is a compilation taken from the 2 cds SWP 036 'The Kankobela of the Batonga Vol. 1' and SWP 039 'The Kankobela of the Batonga Vol. 2'.
